Overal ter wereld zijn steden hongerig. Als gulzige lichamen verorberen ze de gewassen van het nabije en het verre platteland. Zo konden steden groeien, via de succesvolle aanvoer, productie en verkoop van voedsel, via de verwerking en consumptie ervan in keukens en eetgelegenheden en via de afvoer ervan om opnieuw als mest en grondstof te dienen voor land en moestuin. Door de nabije Schelde en het omliggende wegennetwerk kon Antwerpen genieten van een rijke aanvoer van voedsel, waardoor het kon uitgroeien tot stad en rond 1565 al honderdduizend inwoners telde. Tegenwoordig gebeurt de aanvoer van voedsel naar Antwerpen via containers. Daardoor is de havenstad verbonden met een bijzonder groot, wereldwijd platteland. Voedsel heeft Antwerpen gevormd, want eeuwenlang is het hier elke dag verkocht, klaargemaakt, gegeten en in afval omgezet.Antwerpen à la carte toont met oude en actuele beeldende kunst en met waardevol erfgoed een nieuw portret van Antwerpen als etende stad. Het boek en de gelijknamige expositie onthullen het verrassende, grillige en vaak onzichtbare spoor van de voedselketen door Antwerpen sinds 1500. Waar kwamen gewassen vandaan? Waar lagen markten en later winkels? Gelijken hedendaagse keukens en restaurants nog op de keuken en herberg van pakweg de zeventiende eeuw? En waarom werd voedselafval vroeger gerecycleerd?Het verhaal van vroeger is tegelijk uiterst actueel. Wereldwijd wonen steeds meer mensen in steden. Zullen al die stedelingen zich in de toekomst op een duurzame manier kunnen voeden? Recent decades have seen migration history and issues increasingly featured in museums. "Museums and migration" explores the ways in which museum spaces - local, regional and national - have engaged with the history of migration, including internal migration, emigration and immigration. Its presents the latest innovative research from academics and museum practitioners and offers a comparative perspective on a global scale, bringing to light geo- and socio-political specificities. It includes an extensive range of international contributions from Europe, Asia and South America as well as settler societies such as Canada and Australia. "Museums and migration" charts and enlarges the developing body of research which concentrates on the analysis of the representation of migration in relation to the changing character of museums within society, examining their civic role and their function as key public arenas within civil society. This artist's book id the culmination of Hans Op de Beeck's long-term project 'Sea of Tranquillity'. The publication includes film stills, texts, sculptures, watercolours and even a soundtrack (sung by Sandrine). In his familiar pictorial style mildly surreal and resolutely critical the artist confronts us with a large-scale but fictional luxury cruise-ship. This artificial city symbolizes a postmodern society in which extreme luxury is accompanied by a moral vacuum. On board we do not only meet Eros and Thanatos, but also boredom, miscommunication and a hierarchical crew.
